‘Django Unchained,’ ‘Ted’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ Score 2013 MTV Movie Award Noms

The nominees for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards have been revealed, setting up what looks to be another rollicking ceremony celebrating the Cinema of Cool (via golden statues of popcorn — or Golden Popcorns, if you want to be all official-like).

MTV’s own Josh Horowitz joined “Pitch Perfect” star Rebel Wilson to announce the nominees, with Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” coming forth as the major contenders with seven nominations each. Does this mean that the slave turned bounty hunter should team up with the foul-mouthed, hard-drinking teddy bear in some future cinematic adventure? Hey, we’d see it. Twice.

Meanwhile, “Silver Linings Playbook” follows close behind with six nominations, while Christian Bale’s final (OR IS IT?) gig as the Caped Crusader, “The Dark Knight Rises,” scored five. Rounding it up are “The Avengers,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” Wilson’s own “Pitch Perfect” and the latest 007 adventure “Skyfall” with four nominations each.

Check out the full list of nominees at NextMovie, and seize the “Power of the Popcorn” yourself as voting will be open from now through Saturday, April 13 at the official site of the MTV Movie Awards. The 2013 Movie Awards will air live on Sunday, April 14 at 9:00 P.M. ET/PT on MTV.

Ben Affleck Wins Directors Guild of America Award for ‘Argo’

Well, this is awkward.

As reported by Deadline, Ben Affleck won the top prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards last night, taking home the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for his hit film “Argo.” The win, which further cements “Argo’s” chances at the Oscars, comes despite the fact that Affleck wasn’t even nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards.

And Affleck thinks that may actually be helping the film.

“I have nothing but respect for the Film Academy,” Affleck said. “I’m also very grateful to the DGA. I mean, you’re not entitled to anything in life. I’m thrilled and honored that the Academy nominated me as a producer for the movie. Maybe taking me out of [the director race] helps give us purpose, because it’s just about that movie as a picture.”

Since the DGA Awards were first presented by in 1948, there have been only six occasions where the winner of the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film award failed to earn the Oscar as well. Until this year, that is.

“The four folks here who are nominated I consider my betters,” Affleck said, praising fellow nominees Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Ang Lee and Tom Hooper. “There’s no other way of saying it. I work really hard at this… You know, I got to a point in my life where I was really down, really confused, really felt beset on all sides by life, didn’t know what was gonna happen. And I thought, I should be a director.” He added, “I don’t think this makes me a real director. But I think it means I’m on my way.”

“Argo” previously won the top prize at the Golden Globes, the Producers Guild of America Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The only other film award given out on the evening went to Malik Bendjelloul, who won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for “Search for Sugar Man.” And “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” director Milos Foreman was presented with a lifetime achievement award.

A full list of winners, including those in the television categories, can be found on the official DGA website.

‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Dark Knight’ Dominate 2013 People’s Choice Award Nominees

The nominees for the 2013 People’s Choice Awards were announced earlier today and superheroes dominated the action, with “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” earning a combined 27 nominations.

Those three blockbusters will be facing off against “The Hunger Games” for Favorite Action Movie, Favorite Franchise and Favorite Movie, which is also being contested by “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

Of course, those films weren’t eligible for every category, which opened the door for Channing Tatum to pick up nominations for Favorite Movie Actor, Favorite Comedic Actor and Favorite Dramatic Actor for his dual roles in “Magic Mike” and “21 Jump Street,” which earned Favorite Dramatic Movie and Favorite Comedic Movie nominations respectively. “The Vow” is also up for Favorite Dramatic Movie, meaning Tatum is facing off against himself.

Meanwhile, on the distaff side of things, Emmas were wild, with Emma Stone earning Favorite Movie Actress, Favorite On-Screen Chemistry and Favorite Face of Heroism nominations for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Emma Watson earning a Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress nomination for “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and Emma Thompson earning a Favorite Movie Icon nomination for being so awesome.
